Oxford Street to consider opening on Boxing Day

Retailers on London's Oxford Street are considering opening on Boxing Day this year to maximise sales over the festive period.

Store groups including Marks & Spencer, Selfridges, House of Fraser, Debenhams and Allders will gauge shopper reaction to the idea before going ahead.

Some retailers on the Oxford Street, such as HMV and Virgin Megastores, kick-start their Sales Boxing Day, but to date many big department stores have remained closed.

- Legislation may soon be passed protecting retail staff from being forced to work on Christmas Day.

Employment Relations Minister Alan Johnson said in the House of Commons that it would be beneficial to legislate.

Usdaw General Secretary Sir Bill Connor said: 'This is great news for our union's members. We are hopeful that the law could be in place for this Christmas.
