Over-ordering at M&S results in sizeable backlog

Marks & Spencer faces a five- to six-month backlog of childrenswear after over-ordering this season, according to logistics industry sources.

The retailer's childrenswear supremo, Michele Jobling, left in September amid teething troubles for the new ranges.

Now it is thought that new space has been allocated by logistics firms to store the stock. There are also said to have been negotiations with overseas suppliers to slow childrenswear production.

An M&S spokeswoman said: 'It's no secret that we have issues with childrenswear and have been disappointed with its performance.' She refused to comment further.

- Helena Feltham, M&S's human resources director, is leaving after 25 years to set up her own consultancy.
