Managing director, Costcutter Supermarkets Group

What was your first job in retailing?

I began in the licensing trade with John Smith’s 30 years ago.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

The Carphone Warehouse. It’s a great example of an entrepreneur (Charles Dunstone) believing in his idea and turning it into a hugely successful business.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

I’m very demanding and can be overzealous in my pursuit to deliver the best service possible to our retailers
and customers.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

Our retailers. They are so entrepreneurial and it is inspiring to see them working so hard to grow their businesses.

What advice would you give someone starting out?

It’s hard work and you must really get your hands dirty to learn everything about the business and what your customers really want.

What keeps you awake at night?

Nothing.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Working with a diverse group of people across the business with the common goal of constantly improving our offer.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Buying my first business.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

I’m a massive sports fan, so I would have loved to have been involved in sports management.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

I really like car dealerships. There’s nothing quite like the smell of a new car.

What was your last purchase?

A new TaylorMade driver. I’m hoping that this one will hit the ball straight.
