Clare Gilmartin, Vice president of eBay Marketplaces EU, tells Retail Week about her life working in retail.

What was your first job in retailing?

I was the Asda account manager at Unilever for personal care.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

I admire Marks & Spencer for continuing to stay relevant. As a brand it was quick to recognise the importance of mobile. I also admire Boden and The White Company for knowing their target customers well, and broadening their ranges successfully.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

The fact that I am a compulsive shopper!

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

It may sound cliched, but I learn most from customers. I get my best ideas when talking directly to customers.

What advice would you give someone starting out in retail?

Seek advice from mentors and from those around you. Nobody can get to the top without support, and mentors can help when it comes to developing your career.

What keeps you awake at night?

I have very young children, so I do worry about balancing work and family, but flexible working has allowed me to do so.

What’s the most satisfying part of your job?

Working in an area I am deeply passionate about. I love innovating for shoppers.

What’s your proudest achievement?

Overseeing the growth of the fashion category on eBay, which has grown around 30% year on year since 2010. There are now over 100 high street retailers selling through the site, and the Fashion Outlet is home to over 30 high street brands.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

I really can’t imagine myself doing anything else.

What’s your favourite shop and why?

An independent clothes retailer near where I live.

What was your last purchase?

Clothes online for myself and my kids, bought on my iPad and mobile.
