Mothercare picks JDA to overhaul buying systems

Mothercare, in the midst of a turnaround, is to overhaul its buying and merchandising department with a new computer system to improve the flow of stock across the business.

The initiative forms part of five key projects implemented by chief executive Ben Gordon, which include piloting new store formats, improving product and sourcing, overhauling Mothercare's supply chain and infrastructure and delivering better customer service.

The system, called Arthur and designed by JDA Software, will be phased in over the next few months and will go live in April 2004. The aim is to better drive the retailer's buying plan, by recording which products are bestsellers and monitoring where they are in the business.

Mothercare strategic development director Steve Pomfret said: 'It will help us to improve planning across all our channels, which will strengthen our position.'

Mothercare was due to post interims as Retail Week went to press.
