Mothercare boss bonus is unfair, says watchdog

A corporate watchdog has advised shareholders to reject a bonus scheme for Mothercare's recently appointed chief executive at the retailer's AGM today.

Pensions & Investment Research Consultants (PIRC) said the the scheme's rationale had not been explained.

Chief executive Ben Gordon was presented with a signing-on fee of£100,000 and an£85,000 annual performance-related bonus for the year to March 2003, despite only being with the company for four months to that point.

He was the only director to receive such a bonus at the store group.
