MFI's 100-store refit boosts both sales and profit

MFI, Britain's biggest furniture retailer, has refitted 100 of its 212 stores, which have generated an average increase in orders of 20 per cent.

The retailer is also piloting a partial refit in locations where a full revamp would be unwarranted. The first opened in Eastbourne at the end of last year.

Fully-refitted shops achieved 25 per cent growth, and partial refits, which cost less, are providing uplifts of 12 per cent.

Speaking at last week's interims, chief executive John Hancock said MFI had made 'continuing progress' and had remained successful 'even in tougher trading conditions'.

Hancock has steered the recovery of MFI over the past few years, and the refits have been key in enabling the retailer to stage its comeback.

MFI posted a half-year pre-tax profit before exceptionals of£54.5 million - up 18.7 per cent. Turnover was 17.1 per cent better at£708 million.
