Marks & Spencer is to introduce a set of applications from SAP Retail to its business to reduce costs and improve operating efficiencies.

The project – which will see IBM handle the software implementation – has been designed to improve stock visibility and management of information.

M&S believes that it will be able to enhance its customer experience and allow greater control over net margin.

IBM has also made recommendations to ensure that all aspects are aligned with Marks & Spencer's Plan A environmental initiative.

For example, the increased accuracy of business data will help M&S to monitor and report its environmentally friendly activities.

Marks & Spencer director of IT and logistics Darrell Stein said: “We selected IBM and SAP after an extensive assessment of the market. In addition to strong retail credentials, we felt there was also a strong cultural alignment. In order to provide the very best customer service, we need to be flexible and agile to their changing needs. The SAP solution, implemented by IBM, will allow us to do that.”
