Record profits prompt pay hike
Tesco chief executive Sir Terry Leahy received a pay rise of almost 25 per cent last year, when the supermarket chain unveiled record profits.

Leahy's salary with bonuses and other benefits amounted to£3.98 million for the year to February 25, compared with£3.19 million the year before.

His basic salary rose 6 per cent to£1.1 million and his benefits package jumped 44 per cent in value to£97,000. He also received 1.28 million shares.

Tesco, the UK's largest supermarket, reported pre-tax profits of£2.2 billion in April this year, a rise of 18 per cent. Sales rose 17 per cent to£43.1 billion.
