Tesco boss unfazed by criticism of the grocer
While everyone seems to be having their say about Tesco's growing power, Sir Terry Leahy seemed genuinely untroubled by the furore today. The supermarket giant revealed another set of market-beating results this morning, producing profits of£2.2 billion, but Leahy remains the model of calm.

Asked if he is annoyed by criticism of the company, Leahy replied: 'I don't get annoyed. Tesco touches a lot of people's lives and you're going to get a lot of views. We know some people have a problem with Tesco, but the vast majority of people have very little problem with it.'

However, Tesco is clearly aware of the need to reinforce its socially responsible credentials. It announced a raft of environmental measures and next month will launch a plan to help local communities in areas where it operates.

The company revealed further plans for growth online in non-food, and for a£5 billion sale-and-leaseback that could lead to a re-rating of the share price, which many in the City feel undervalues UK retail's star performer.

Having achieved so much and with the threat of a full Competition Commission probe on the agenda, Leahy could be forgiven for wanting to call it a day. But he rebuffed suggestions that he might be considering moving on to another challenge.

'If you cut me in half, I've got Tesco written through me,' the Liverpudlian said, before pausing. 'Well, actually, Tesco and Everton.'
