Kingdom of Leather picks MD ahead of refit drive

Kingdom of Leather has promoted retail director Steve Adams to managing director. He is charged with leading a combined store refurbishment and expansion push, backed by new Italian parent Natuzzi.

Adams succeeds Steve Winetroube, who assumed the role in March with the express purpose of putting together a sale, following the completion of a two-year programme to reposition the 14-strong chain. He is now departing for sabattical.

Adams said: 'Our business plan is both to refurbish the existing estate to the standard of the Thurrock store and controlled roll-out of expansion plans. I can't emphasise the level of under-investment in the business at present.'

Former executive chairman Peter Dickson exited in March after fulfiling a company doctor role that steered the retailer upmarket. A more fashion-led approach at Thurrock is delivering 'double-digit' like-for-like growth.

Adams said the successful design elements of Thurrock are being incorporated in a refit schedule that is already at an advanced stage. Three stores will be overhauled this year.

In May, Natuzzi - the world leader in leather upholstery manufacture - bought Kingdom of Leather from former owner Castlegate 170 for an estimated£30 million.

It aims to double store numbers within two-and-a-half years, seeking out 10,000 sq ft (930 sq m) stores in prime retail park destinations.

Last year, Kingdom of Leather made a pre-tax profit of£682,000.
