Sales at department store chain John Lewis rose 9.1% last week to £59.2m as the retailer’s Sale drew shoppers.

Fashion sales rose 13.6% in the week to July 10, when sales of new stock climbed by 30% across all main categories.

Home sales advanced 10.6%. Outdoor living product performed strongly as a result of the weather. Fitted furniture was up 42% and textiles – a big clearance category – rose 10%.

Electricals and home technology sales edged up 0.6%, helped by demand for computers and small electrical goods – such as fans – which rose 18%.

Johnlewis.com sales surged 44.7%.

John Lewis Region A selling operations director Nat Wakely said the clearance period is nearing its end, “hopefully with a strong final flourish as we look ahead to the back to school season and exciting new lines flowing in as we approach the second half of our financial year.”

Turnover at stablemate grocery chain Waitrose climbed 13% over the week to £96.3m.

The hot weather and World Cup boosted sales of barbecue foods, which were up 134%, and barbecues themselves, up 324%.

Speciality lagers rose 72% and cider was up 48%.
