Jessops to expand into Europe

Jessops, the photography specialist, is actively seeking to acquire small chains on the Continent to provide a launchpad into Europe.

Brand development director Symon Powell, appointed in March, said no deals had yet been struck, but confirmed: 'In terms of expansion, what we are looking at is acquisition in mainland Europe, where they tend to be smaller chains.'

However, the main focus of expansion will continue to be the UK, where Jessops has 243 stores and expects to open approximately 20 a year.

Powell has almost completed the brand strategy he began upon his arrival.

He said: 'With the advent of digital photography, we are aiming to broaden the appeal of the Jessops brand. It's been a very busy two months. Now we're close to completing the strategy.'

He said the review had focused on ways of communicating Jessops' offer to new customers, not just established photography fans.

As a result of the review, Jessops plans a marketing campaign that will encompass its broadest range of media yet. The retailer will repeat its previous tactic of using television and specialist media, but will also introduce e-marketing and direct mail.

Powell said Jessops would use the mass appeal of its digital technology and expertise of its staff to woo customers.
