Wal-Mart Canada has opened its first eco-friendly Supercenter in Waterdown, Ontario.

The store, which is expected to use 30% less energy than other branches, is to be the standard for all future Wal-Mart stores across Canada. “We continue to pilot new technologies, drive innovation and experiment with new prototypes to create some of the most sustainable stores in retail,” said Wal-Mart Canada chief executive and president David Cheesewright.

The Waterdown store will also run a number of waste recycling programmes for materials including paper, plastic, organics, polystyrene, wood and metal.
