General merchandise retailer Target plans to open a new, smaller-format store in Seattle in 2012 and has plans to expand in 10 further markets, including San Francisco and Baltimore, in the next few years.

The new store will cover about 90,000 sq ft, while its other urban concept stores will range from 60,000 sq ft to 100,000 sq ft. A typical Target store is between 125,000 sq ft and 180,000 sq ft. “We are increasingly realising that one size doesn’t fit all,” said Target executive vice-president of property management John Griffith.
