International News - Struggling fashion chain J Crew picks ex-Gap star Drexler for top job

Former Gap boss, Mickey Drexler, has been appointed chairman and chief executive officer of fashion retailer J Crew - the retailer's third in five years.

He takes over from former Gap colleague Ken Pilot, who resigned with immediate effect. Drexler has named Gap cohort Jeff Pfeifle as president.

Pfeifle, a product development specialist, is said to have had a close working relationship with Drexler during their time at the clothing giant.

Drexler's experience at Gap, where he was credited with much of the retailer's success, should be useful at 200-store J Crew, which has experienced a sales fall from US$827.6 million (£505 million) in 2000 to US$750 million (£457.7 million). In 2001, J Crew reported a loss of US$11 million (£6.7 million). This downturn contributed to the departure of chief executive Mark Sarvary in May last year, in addition to 100 redundancies at the New York headquarters.
