International News - Striking workers in Thanksgiving disruption threat

Striking US grocery workers are attempting to take the wind out of employers' Thanksgiving sales by disrupting the flow of goods from regional distribution centres.

However, the three grocers - Albertsons, Kroger's Ralphs chain and Safeway-owned Vons - locked in the dispute with the United Food and Commercial Workers Union maintain 'contingency plans' will prevent empty shelves in the run-up to this weekend's celebrations.

A second round of collective bargaining with a federal mediator ended on Monday, with headway made on wages and pensions. No timetable has been set to resume talks, so workers are squaring up to an eighth week of industrial action.
