International News - Habitat launches city push in Paris

Habitat reopened its refurbished Avenue de Wagram store in Paris on Tuesday as part of a push for store openings and relocations into big cities.

The changes in France, part of a business-wide overhaul, began with a£1 million revamp of the Place de la Republique store last September.

The Avenue de Wagram shop has been refreshed and a 1,720 sq ft (160 sq m) annexe has been turned into a decorations boutique with architects Douglas Wallace.

A Habitat spokeswoman said other revamps are planned, and a number of stores in France, including Marseilles, are being relocated from out-of-town to city centres.

She said a seventh shop will open in Paris this September, in Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine, and another two stores have been identified in Southeast France, but not yet confirmed.

Although the retailer has a handful of franchise partners in 11 countries, the spokeswoman said: 'We are concentrating on our core European markets.

There is a lot of activity in France because we have been looking to relocate stores.' She said Habitat is examining its entire portfolio of 73 stores in the UK, France, Germany and Spain.

This September will bring the fifth store opening in Spain - the second in the capital, Madrid.
