International News - Gap hires sandwich man to expand chain

Fashion group Gap has appointed former Pret A Manger chairman and chief executive Andrew Rolfe as head of its international division.

Rolfe, who is also a WHSmith non-executive director, becomes president of Gap International, replacing Ken Pilot who left in August.

International growth at Gap is expected to be the main space expansion route as the retailer reaches saturation point in the US.

Gap chief executive Paul Pressler said: 'We know our brands have global consumer appeal, and international expansion represents a clear longer-term opportunity for our company.'

He said the main task for Rolfe and his team would be to identify 'customer preferences' in international markets and tailor the Gap offer accordingly.

Rolfe spent five years at Pret A Manger, during which time the snack specialist was launched in the US.

He was also formerly chief executive of Booker Foodservice and has held directorships and vice-presidencies at Booker Plc and PepsiCo Restaurants International.
