International News - Delhaize trims expansion plans in Belgium and US

Delhaize is to scale back planned store openings and focus on remodelling existing shops. The Belgian food retailer is to open about 40 fewer stores than previously planned for this financial year.

The group expects to have 2,580 outlets at the end of the year. Planned openings will be reduced in the US and Belgium.

But Delhaize is to increase the number of refurbishments in the US this year by 22 to 104, concentrating on improving layout and customer service.

Delhaize expects its capital expenditure to fall to EUR530 million (£373.1 million) from EUR650 million (£457.6 million) as a result of fewer store openings. The group announced net earnings of EUR9.3 million (£6.5 million) after exceptionals for the second quarter, while group organic sales growth jumped by 2.8 per cent.
