International News - Delhaize drops its prices again

Retail giant Delhaize has slashed prices on a further 1,000 products in its Belgian stores during June. The initiative follows the retailer's decision last year to scrap its weekly price promotions and adopt an 'every day fair prices' policy.

Delhaize originally replaced its promotion-based approach with 3,400 price cuts and added another 2,000 reductions in April. The retailer is also strengthening its private label range, which is up to 15 per cent cheaper than equivalent branded products. Private label accounts for more than 30 per cent of Delhaize's sales.

Although visitor numbers initially fell, the retailer said the average shopping basket value rose immediately and that the number of customer visits is also on the rise.
