International News - Conforama makeovers lift French sales

French retail giant Pinault-Printemps-Redoute (PPR) has seen French sales rise in its recently revamped furniture chain Conforama.

PPR chairman Serge Weinberg said the 15 stores had seen sales increase by 'nearly 10 per cent' after being given makeovers and a new layout, although he added that it was still early days.

Conforama, the second largest furniture chain in the world, saw comparable third-quarter sales rise by 1.8 per cent after strong international sales.

The market is harder at home, where comparable sales fell 1.2 per cent at the retailer's 184 stores.

Weinberg said: 'Although the environment remains lacklustre, our companies continue to gain market share in France and are pursuing their vigorous international development.' He said PPR-owned entertainment retailer Fnac was surging forward in all its product areas, and reported an 8 per cent increase in comparable sales in the third quarter.
