International News - Coles hires former Asda high-flyer Cain

Former Asda group marketing director Steven Cain has been appointed as managing director of the food and fuel divisions of Australian retail group Coles Meyer.

Cain is the second director from a UK retailer that Coles has appointed in the past two months. Former Tesco operations director and House of Fraser chairman Michael Wemms was appointed in June.

Cain will be responsible for Coles Meyer's Bi-Lo, Coles and Liquorland chains, as well as the company's wider food and fuel offer.

Chief executive John Fletcher said: 'The Asda team, of which Cain was a part, is recognised as having led one of the most remarkable turnarounds in retailing history, culminating in the sale of the business to Wal-Mart in 1999.'

Cain, now 38, became the youngest chief executive in the FTSE 100 after leaving Asda to join media giant Carlton in 1999.

He left Carlton after the announcement of a proposed merger with United News Media.
