Implementation of chip and PIN raises concerns

Most retailers back the idea of the chip and PIN fraud-busting programme, but fear problems with software and hardware may delay implementation.

According to a Retail Week/IBM survey of 100 IT directors and senior managers, there is a high level of procrastination in the industry. More than half of those polled said they are still considering which card readers to use, despite the 2005 implementation deadline.

More than eight in 10 retailers are confident that the move will reduce card fraud. However, two-fifths of retailers fear that consumers will never get used to the system, heralding a return to cheque or cash payments.
