Amazon has unveiled plans to expand its UK fulfilment network with a new centre in Bristol, which will lead to the creation of 1,000 new full-time jobs.

The new site in Severn Beach, Bristol – due to become operational in 2018 – will enable the business to meet increasing customer demand and expand its product selection.

It will be equipped with Amazon’s advanced robotics technology, which the ecommerce business said bolsters the efficiency of its delivery processes and helps it to keep prices low.

The move to expand its UK fulfilment network comes on top of the £6.4bn investment Amazon has made in the UK market since 2010.

It currently has 13 such centres on these shores with plans for new fulfilment sites in Dunstable, Doncaster, Tilbury and Warrington later this year, creating more than 3,500 new permanent jobs.

Last month, it opened a new 600,000 sq ft head office building in Shoreditch, London.

Amazon said it would begin the process of recruiting 1,000 new full-time workers for the Bristol site next year. It will be seeking staff for a range of roles, including operations managers, engineers, and HR and IT specialists.

These new jobs are in addition to the 5,000 the firm pledged to create this year, and will bring its total UK workforce to 24,000.

It comes as Amazon pushes the button on a roll-out of instant pick-up points in the US, allowing customers to collect orders within minutes of ordering online.
