November is always manic for the property industry, with the two big events of the year crammed into two weeks and cocktail reception after cocktail reception ensuring no delegate gets a good night’s sleep.

This morning, three invitations arrived through the post for parties – or should I say “networking” events – at this year’s BCSC conference. And, shortly afterwards, a couple of invitations landed in my inbox for events at this year’s Mapic, just a week after BCSC.

Yet the invitations are not only coming in thick and fast for BCSC and Mapic. Tonight, developer Milligan is hosting a cocktail reception at Tate Britain for a private viewing of the Turner Prize and just last week Land Securities kicked off the leasing campaign for its Livingston scheme The Elements at London’s Soho Hotel.

Land Securities’ shindig not only attracted the usual property agents, but pulled in a good smattering of retailers. Both anchor stores – Marks & Spencer and Debenhams – had representatives at the event and many other retailers that could be interested in taking space came along for a briefing and a glass of champagne.

These events are not just an excuse for another night out, they are an essential part of the property industry. And while summer may have been quiet, as the property industry braced itself for a lull in the investment market and an ever-increasing number of unwanted shops coming on stream, the signs of more positive activity are shining through.

The autumn events season has had a promising start and retailers wouldn’t be in such a party mood if they weren’t ready to look seriously at signing for space. While retailers may not be expanding at the same rate as last year, they are eager to make sure they grab the best opportunities and secure the best deals.

The Christmas party season may well be looming for the retail industry, but for the property industry Christmas has started early. There may be caution in the air while retailers buckle down for Christmas trading, but next year’s lettings appear to be going strong. And with the invitations still coming through the door, this does not look like it is going to let up.
