Hammerson has put in an application to develop a mixed-use scheme in Southampton.

The developer is hoping to build the project, Watermark WestQuay, in the centre of Southampton, next to its existing 820,000 sq ft (76,200 sq m) WestQuay shopping centre.

If approved the scheme will include up to 258,000 sq ft (24,000 sq m) of retail space plus a mixture of cafés, restaurants, 240 apartments, a cinema and a hotel.

The site earmarked for the project is a vacant brownfield plot that was formerly occupied by a Pirelli factory.

Hammerson project director Andrew Hilston said: “We have a proven track record in Southampton with WestQuay shopping centre delivering a strong retail focus for the city. The application submission reinforces our long-term involvement and investment in Southampton ensuring the city remains the destination of choice for the south coast.”
