Tesco has unveiled its new food-to-go sandwich shop format, Fred’s Food Construction, as it aims to take on Pret-a-Manger and Eat with the lunchtime offer.

The 1,000 sq ft store, which is located opposite London’s ‘Walkie Talkie’ building, trades under the Tesco Express fascia but inside it is fitted out as the grocer’s new sandwich offer: Fred’s Food Construction.

Based on a New York-style deli theme, customers can pick up a hot breakfast, sandwiches at lunch and tea or coffee at the deli counter.

The store sells more than 100 different types of sandwiches, sushi and soups, and it has a dedicated area to the Tesco Finest range. It has also installed new slimline self-service checkouts.

It is a development of the Fred’s Food format, which launched for the first time as a restaurant in Tesco’s Osterley store earlier this year.

Tesco’s managing director for London, Andrew Yaxley said: “Our new Philpot Lane store is a great example of Tesco providing the products and services that meet the shopping needs of our customers.

“This new store, located in the heart of London, will offer a wide range of ‘food-to-go’ items ideal for busy office workers, as well as the latest technology to help make the shopping trip quick and easy.”
