Summer sales at Wiggle hit a record high last week pedalled by the Olympics and success of Tour de France winner Bradley Wiggins.

Year-on-year sales at the 12-year-old retailer surged 60%, while British visitors to the website soared 80%, totalling over two million visits last week.

Shoppers were inspired by gold winners Sir Chris Hoy, Laura Trott and Jason Kenny as Wiggle sold out of official Team GB cycling performance wear. Sales of Pinarello bikes – the model favoured by Wiggins – have rocketed 400% this summer.

Thousands more water bottles and puncture repair kits were also sold in a week the company described as its “best ever”.

Wiggle marketing director Martin Talbot said: “Thousands of consumers have shopped with us for the first time, but we’ve also seen many Wiggle regulars – existing cycling enthusiasts, who are significantly upgrading their kit.

“We hope this golden summer for cycle retailers is the beginning of a new era of cycling on home soil and beyond.”
