Fopp targeted by data protection profiteering

Retailers have been warned to beware of spurious payment demands from businesses offering data protection services after music specialist Fopp was targeted.

The Scottish-based retailer received a letter from a business calling itself the Data Protection Enforcement Agency, demanding£135 payment for Fopp to 'comply with the Data Protection Registrar'.

However, Fopp had paid£35 to register earlier in the year, so managing director Peter Ellen phoned the Information Commissioner's office to clarify the situation. He was advised to throw the letter in the bin.

An Office of Fair Trading spokeswoman said: 'We have had a lot of complaints about these sort of cases and have taken action against a number of companies. Although they are perfectly entitled to act as middleman and register companies with the Information Commissioner, we have issues with their advertising.'
