Primark notched up record sales of £820,000 at its flagship store on London’s Oxford Street on Saturday, according to newspaper reports.

It was the best one-day performance by any one store in Primark’s 41-year history, according to The Independent newspaper.

Primark saw the sales rise on the same day that the New West End Company, which represents retailers in the West End of London, shut its Oxford and Regent Streets to traffic to encourage shoppers to begin their Christmas shopping in force.

The takings at the store near Marble Arch on Saturday helped it to achieve nearly £4m in sales over the last week.

In the 53 weeks to September 18, Primark saw profits rise 35% to £341m on total sales up 18% to £2.73bn.
