The luxury fashion etailer said Beighton will take the reins from current boss Paolo De Cesare in August, following a short transition period.

The surprise appointment marks Beighton’s first executive role since leaving Asos in October last year.

Beighton spent 12 years with the online fashion giant, having initially joined as acting finance boss in 2009. He went on to become chief operating officer and was named chief executive in 2015.

During his time at the helm, Beighton grew Asos into a £3.9bn business with 15,000 employees before his abrupt exit in the autumn.

Since leaving the etailer, Beighton has taken on the role of chair at Secret Sales and had also been linked to a number of other non-executive positions prior to this morning’s announcement.

Beighton said: “I love fashion and ecommerce and have long been an admirer of Matchesfashion. It is a pioneer in the sector and has redefined the face of luxury shopping with its unique fashion perspective and distinct, curated edit.

“Starting from a single store in London 35 years ago, it has become the go-to place for luxury fashion online, yet it still has huge potential. Using technology, product, logistics and culture, I have helped disrupt existing consumer patterns and galvanise change in organisations and I hope to bring these skills to my new role.”

Tom Hall, partner at Matchesfashion owner Apax and a member of the retailer’s board, added: “Matchesfashion is in a fortunate position to be able to attract a CEO of Nick Beighton’s calibre. Nick is a proven operator with phenomenal knowledge of online retail.

“On behalf of the board, I would like to thank Paolo for everything he has achieved at Matchesfashion and wish him well in his future ventures.”

De Cesare said: “I am pleased with the progress we have made at Matchesfashion since I joined. The business is growing, we are strengthening relationships with our luxury brands and hiring some excellent new talent. I have enjoyed working with the talented team and wish Nick and the team the best for continued success.”
