Tesco is to release an exclusive album to celebrate the 50th anniversary of favourite soap opera Coronation Street.

The album has been written by musical writer Trisha Ward and features cast members from Coronation Street teaming up with the Royal Philharmonic orchestra.

Called Coronation Street Rogues, Angels Heroes & Fools – The Album, the release will be launched on December 6.

The move follows other exclusive entertainment deals including Robbie Williams’ autobiography You Know Me, albums by Nadine Coyle, Simply Red and Faithless and films including Merry Madagascar.

The Corrie album draws on humorous and dramatic plot lines featuring eccentric characters and soap heroes, including Tony Warren’s iconic ‘Opening Episode’, Hilda & Stan’s famous second honeymoon in ‘Woman Stanley Woman’ leading up to Richard Hillman’s stint as the Street’s serial killer in ‘Norman Bates With A Briefcase’.

The album was recorded at Abbey Road studios.

Rob Salter, director of entertainment at Tesco, said: “We are very proud to add this prestigious product to our growing portfolio of highly successful exclusive CD deals. The fantastic thing about Coronation Street, The Album, is that it not only pays tribute to the wonderful show, it is a great record with great songs. We believe this will be one of our most successful albums this Christmas.”
