DVDs to help chains survive games market turmoil

DVD sales will form a key part of entertainment retailer Game's strategy for coping with the next videogames downturn, according to deputy chief executive Martin Long.

The market may bottom out within the next two years due to the transition period between generations of technology.

'We have to look at ways to survive, such as taking advantage of the DVD capabilities of games consoles,' said Long at the Entertainment and Leisure Software Publishers Association Games Summit.

Mark Garrett, business development director at rival Gamestation, said his firm would adopt a similar strategy.

'Because of the DVD functionality of PlayStation 2 and Xbox, selling DVDs is an important way to do this,' said Garrett.

Game has also invested£20 million in upgrading its distribution centre.

Long said this would give Game 'greater control over our own destiny'.
