Dr China opens Yeovil store as battle hots up

Chinese medicine's long march is continuing across the UK. Dr China has added to its 30-plus-strong chain by taking a 15-year FRI lease on a unit in Middle Street, Yeovil at£41,500 a year, which equates to a Zone A of£78 per sq ft (£840 per sq m).

The Chinese herbal operator, which opened its first shop in Kent five years ago, has focused on stores in 100 per cent prime locations in central London and the Southeast. Agent Gerald Eve has acquired more than 20 stores for Dr China in the past 12 months. Gerald Eve associate Mark Hillier said Dr China has aggressive growth plans covering the next two to three years.

The popularity of Chinese remedies has soared in recent years, as consumers have sought alternatives to Western medicine.

Rival operator Dr & Herbs, now represented by Ian Scott & Co, launched in 1997 and operates 67 stores. Herb Medic, the other major player in the market, controls a 26-strong store chain.

Agent Colliers CRE is continuing to look nationwide for prominent retail positions with good footfall for Herb Medic, which opened its first store eight years ago.
