Carphone Warehouse is one of the businesses owned by Dixons Carphone, the electricals and mobile communications specialist.
Carphone Warehouse was founded by entrepreneurs Sir Charles Dunstone and David Ross to take advantage of the rise of mobile phones.
The retailer was floated in 2000. In 2014, it merged with electricals retailer Dixons, owner of the Currys PC World business in the UK and others internationally.
The intention was to create a business well positioned to cater for consumers’ needs as digital technology, spurred by innovations in mobile such as the launch of Apple’s iPhone, became an ever more integral part of everyday life.
After the tie-up Carphone branches were increasingly co-located in three-in-one shops alongside the Currys and PC World brands.
In recent years, the mobile phones business has been hit by the ‘unbundling’ of purchases of devices and connectivity, which Dixons Carphone is in the midst of addressing.
