Comet tops e-tail league in Christmas Web battle

Kingfisher-owned Comet was the Christmas e-commerce electricals winner, in terms of visitor numbers, according to Web researcher Hitwise.

For the five consecutive weeks to January 4, Comet.co.uk had a higher share of store browsers than any single competitor, including Currys, Dixons Online, Tesco Electrical Warehouse and Dial-a-Phone.

Over the period, Comet took between 8 and 11 per cent of the visitor share each week. Hitwise said Comet.co.uk also received the most individual page hits in the Christmas period.

Comet confirmed that its e-Christmas had been a success. Sales doubled in the four weeks to December 21 compared to the same period in 2001. Sales peaked on December 16, when the site generated sales of almost£500,000.

Comet head of marketing for e-commerce Hilary Perchard said the figures followed a similar percentage rise last year. 'We know it's been a good Christmas for us online. There is an increasing amount of confidence in the Internet,' he said.

He added that Comet experienced the highest overall sales the week ending December 14. Hitwise said Comet.co.uk took 8.7 per cent of visitor numbers in that week compared to 7.3 per cent at Dixons Online and 7 per cent at Currys.

The news comes as Comet's e-commerce arm prepares to separate from e-Kingfisher ahead of the demerger of Kingfisher's electricals division.

Perchard said the site is now capable of running effectively on its own.
