Comet gears up for Xmas gaming battle

Comet, the Kesa-owned electricals retailer, is preparing to do battle in the computer games market this Christmas, with strategies to push market share.

Foremost is a plan to increase games space by 30 per cent. Deputy managing director, commercial, Hugh Harvey said: 'Games is at the forefront of the categories we want to develop.'

Harvey said that in the past, Comet had given way in certain markets and concentrated on its core strengths. The retailer is now determined to maintain and increase market share in all areas where it has a foothold.

In a presentation to suppliers on Tuesday, Comet said that last year it increased volume sales of games by 26 per cent. The big Christmas push will include moving games to front of store in approximately 10 of Comet's 43 destination stores.

The retailer will also up the number of category bundles, to drive attachment sales in both PC and console games.

Assistant category PC buyer Clare Hunter said 54 per cent of customers who buy a PC also buy a printer, but only 6 per cent also buy a game. 'If we can increase the attachment rate to 10 per cent, we will have about£500,000 extra buying power in this area,' she told suppliers.
