Co-op Group commits to fair trade by striking Ghanaian deal for own-brand chocolate

Co-operative Group is to sell only fair trade own-brand chocolate in a push that may double UK sales of the ethically produced confectionery.

The retailer has struck a deal with Ghanaian cocoa co-operative Kuapa Kokoo to supply all its own-brand chocolate, which could encourage UK supermarkets to expand their fair trade offers.

Co-operative Group head of brand and corporate marketing Terry Hudghton said: 'The cocoa growers of West Africa are some of the world's most exploited workers, but we can make a difference to their lives by eating fair trade chocolate.'

Co-op expects UK retailers' sales of fair trade chocolate to double to£6 million.

The food group has also appointed a local sourcing manager for the first time. Peter Hubscher, previously category marketing manager for meat, poultry and fish, has taken up the post.
