French retail giant Carrefour has revealed its Champion supermarket brand could disappear in the next three years, as it has plans to convert more than 1,000 of the stores to Carrefour.

Carrefour chief executive José Luis Duran said that, following successful trials at 13 stores in France, he was confident that the Carrefour brand would work with customers. He also said the conversion could generate cost savings via the supply chains and branding.

However, Duran added that the final decision would be made by the end of the first quarter next, although the roll-out was highly likely. “I don’t know many alternatives to secure such a big like-for-like sales growth in France,” he told analysts in Bordeaux. Carrefour said it would cost from €250,000 to €400,000 (£179,880 to£287,809) to convert each store.

Champion was run by the Halley family until it merged with the Carrefour group in the 1990s. The retailer has rebranded about 208 of its Spanish Champion stores to Carrefour already.
