The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has won almost£1 million of Government funding to wage war on the high street thugs and thieves making retailers' lives a misery.
The trade association will be on the receiving end of a£900,000 grant from the Home Office to fund a new partnership, Action Against Business Crime (AABC).
BRC director general Bill Moyes said the cash was a 'clear indication' of the Government's determination to fight alongside retailers as part of a long-term strategy.
'Retail crime partnerships are an effective way to reduce crime and ensure that our shopping precincts remain safe,' said Moyes. 'The Government's funding of AABC will allow the partnerships to be extended to more towns, city shopping centres and car parks.'
The aim is to bring retailers and other businesses together with police and local authority representatives to exchange information about offenders, set up radio links between stores and share crime prevention advice.
- Sainsbury's continues to be a fully paid-up member of the BRC (Retail Week, November 7). BRC director general Bill Moyes said: 'There was never any truth in the story that Sainsbury's were considering leaving. They are fully engaged and involved in the BRC at every level - from Sir Peter down to those members of staff sitting on our technical committees.
'There was nothing unusual in my meeting with the Sainsbury's board. I am always happy to meet with any member and discuss how we are providing bottom line value for their company.'
