Birthdays plans roll-out of Gadget Shop products

Card retailer Birthdays is planning to introduce The Gadget Shop merchandise to all stores by Christmas, following a successful pre-Father's Day trial.

The trial introduced The Gadget Shop merchandise into 50 stores at the end of last month, selling a small selection items ranging from£5 to£15.

Birthdays and The Gadget Shop were in talks this week to discuss the details of the expansion to all of Birthdays' 507 stores. Among the issues being discussed will be the expansion of the range to include more products.

Birthdays buying and marketing director Chris Tapp said the partnership had exceeded expectations, describing it as 'a phenomenal success'.

The Gadget Shop chairman Chris Gorman said he would consider other partnerships, but stressed the deal with Birthdays did not represent a move into wholesale.

He said The Gadget Shop opened seven more stores in the past week, taking the total to 55. He added that 90 stores would be open by Christmas.

Gorman has also recently moved his team to a new 10,000 sq ft (930 sq m) head office in Glasgow and wants to take on a further 500 sales staff by Christmas.

He said he has recently taken on 25 additional head office staff, but added: 'I've got to watch how far I stretch the team.'
