B&Q is planning an aggressive push on white-goods, offering a wider range of cookers, dishwashers and fridges.
The leading DIY retailer has offered such products as part of fitted kitchens in the past, but now plans a standalone range to be introduced gradually.
Analysts believe that parent Kingfisher's demerger of Kesa means that there is no longer a conflict of interest with Comet in B&Q selling white goods.
But a spokeswoman for B&Q said that the appliances move is unconnected to the demerger of electricals.
She said: 'We have been looking at the white goods side and the opportunities to expand it further for a few months now, offering freestanding appliances, as well as those as part of fitted kitchens.'
JP Morgan analyst Philip Mitchell said: 'We believe B&Q has the potential to emulate Home Depot and Lowes of the US, by entering the UK appliances market in dramatic fashion.'
