Sales at fashion e-tailer Asos rocketed 90 per cent in the year to March 31, reaching about £81 million.

Current trading has also remained strong, despite the slowdown in consumer spending. In the four weeks to April 27, sales jumped 80 per cent year on year.

Asos chief executive Nick Robertson said: “Despite the uncertain economic conditions, I remain optimistic about the prospects for Asos. We continue to benefit from the increasing popularity of online shopping and we have made considerable investments in management, infrastructure, product ranges and marketing to support and sustain future growth.”

Robertson also revealed that pre-tax profits would be slightly ahead of market expectations.
