Asda has slashed the price of petrol across the UK and is calling on other retailers to follow suit.

In its tenth price reduction since July, Asda has cut the cost of petrol at its 172 forecourts to 90.9p per litre, the lowest price since April 2007.

Asda has also cut the price of diesel to 105.9p per litre.

The move is the latest in a string of price-cuts by the grocers, with Tesco, Sainsburys and Morrisons also reducing prices in recent months.

Asda, which said today that its prices are now the lowest in the UK, said the price reductions are a result of falling oil prices, as demand for petrol weakens in the US.

Asda trading director Darren Blackhurst said: “With oil prices still falling, there is no need for petrol prices to be so high – it is simply ripping off motorists.

“Asda is committed to delivering the best and fairest prices for our customers and our continual price cuts prove that. Others should be following our lead.”
