Argos has averted strike action due to take place tomorrow, following negotiations between its management and union Unite.

The retailer offered its distribution workers a revised pay deal, which will be scrutinised by Unite’s national shop stewards committee on Friday. Employees will vote on the new offer next week.

Last Thursday, Argos distribution staff went on strike in protest at the 4 per cent pay increase then offered by the retailer. Unite said the increase was unacceptable because it fell below the rate of inflation.

Employees downed tools in four distribution centres. More strikes were planned for tomorrow at the same centres, to be followed by a further four days of total stoppages beginning on July 30.
