Etail giant Amazon is planning to open up to 400 bookshops following the launch of its first physical store last year, according to reports.

The etailer, which opened its first physical bookstore in Seattle last November, is aiming to expand its bricks-and-mortar offer across the US, Reuters reported.

The revelation came during a conference call by the boss of US shopping centre operator General Growth Properties, Sandeep Mathrani.

Speaking to analysts Mathrani said: “You’ve got Amazon opening bricks-and-mortar bookstores and their goal is to open, as I understand, 300 to 400 bookstores.”

Amazon declined to comment on the reports.

The Seattle store stocks books based on customer ratings and popularity on Amazon’s website, as well as allowing shoppers to test its Kindle range and other devices.
