Comment on: Uncharitable me
I absolutely take the point, and I'm not saying charity shops are a blight, just too many of them. But if they are now such professional outlets, and selling new product as many are, should they then still have the advantage of 80% business rates relief?

Comment on: Uncharitable me
Thanks to our friend Paul Turner-Mitchell in Rochdale for pointing out that his MP raised this issue in Parliament last year and that the idea was dismissed by minister Bob Neill. Do we think this will be fate of many of Mary Portas's ideas

Comment on: Mary’s regal retail roadshow in Rotherham
It's about the High Street review - we arranged to do an interview with Mary and she was there so I went to Rotherham to do it. In truth - as you'll have seen if you saw Newsnight that evening - we did the interview walking round the town and there wasn't particularly the opportunity to spend time with the shopkeepers. I think I've given a very fair appraisal of both the challenges that Rotherham faces and the many positive steps being taken there, which Mary praised as well. As I wrote, I had local people stopping me in the street who'd seen me interviewing Mary telling me I had to write how bad it was - you can't just write the positives, you have to tell it how it is. Retail Week isn't a consumer title - it's primarily about the business of multiple retailing - and our readership is relatively small and specialised. Very happy to insert some hyperlinks on Monday but with the best will in the world RW is not going to drive many shoppers to these stores. On the alternative uses, I don't think anyone is ruling out other non-retail uses - residential is an example of what can be done but agree education etc also has a role to play.
