Webinar hosted by Retail Week in association with Zeus

Planning for the peak

I Want One Of Those lifts the lid on how it copes with the Christmas peak.

Now is the time to be thinking about what changes you will need to make to ensure that your website can cope with the levels of traffic it could experience over Christmas this year.

That was the view of the three experts who participated in the recent Retail Week and Zeus webinar on the subject of site optimisation. They discussed the different strategies and technologies that you can use to improve the performance of your site when it is experiencing high levels of traffic, as well as more sophisticated techniques to prioritise the experience of customers who are at the checkout stage.

Featuring I Want One Of Those.com head of IT Sagar Vadher, Quocirca analyst Bob Tarzey and Zeus e-retail specialist Graham Moore, viewers can also download a whitepaper on the subject produced by Quocirca.

  • Very interesting discussion – particularly with regards when organisations should plan to carry out performance testing in advance of predicted spikes in traffic. It was suggested during the webinar that the summer months may be the optimum time to begin planning for ‘Cyber Monday’ and the traditional Christmas rush. I agree that it is beneficial to carry out testing well in advance of peak times, however, by testing closer to the code freeze, companies are able to be more reactive to market conditions, have the ability to make more accurate predictions on anticipated traffic and dedicate any additional resources more effectively. This culminates in commercial gain and lessens expenditure on unnecessary resources.

Thanks to a new breed of scriptless testing tools that are simple and cost-effective to implement, it is not too late, even during the last few weeks before the code-freeze, to undertake correct and realistic performance tests and still have time to react if the results are not acceptable. I think it’s important that companies are aware that tools such as these are available from various suppliers cost effectively and can be executed and without any prior knowledge of the solution.
