Retail spending at DIY and household stores on Visa cards jumped 6% over Easter year-on-year.

Data from Visa Europe showed consumers spent almost £210m over the four-day weekend across retailers, such as B&Q and Homebase, against £196m last year.

Easter Saturday was the busiest day of the weekend when over £70m was spent on Visa cards, while sales grew 11% on Easter Monday.

Visa revealed that DIY spend on Visa cards is 10% higher to date in 2014 than it was the same date last year.

Visa Europe director of retailer engagement Natasha Toothill said: “The strong DIY spend over Easter signals two things: the continued overall recovery in consumer confidence and spending; and further evidence of homeowners investing in their properties to capitalise on a buoyant housing market.”

It comes as footfall dropped by double-digits over the Easter weekend, according to data from research firm Springboard. High street footfall slumped 11% on Easter Sunday and 8% on Good Friday but it recorded a comeback on Monday with shopper visits up 10.2%.
